Presentation:
Following the successful collaboration of last year’s conference, “Vulnerabilities at the Borders – Asylum in Times of Crisis,” the C3RD – Centre de Recherche sur les Relations entre les Risques et le Droit at Université Catholique de Lille is once again organising this conference together with Professor Rebecca-Emmanuela Papadopoulou – School of law – National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with European Lawyers in Lesvos (ELIL). The event marks the second year of partnership between the three institutions within the framework of the M2 Legal Clinic on EU Asylum Law in the MA Human Rights, Security & Development.
The conference concludes the academic component of the clinic, in which students conduct supervised research on key developments in EU asylum law and present their findings alongside academics, practitioners, and civil society actors. Following the conference, students continue their engagement through internships in Athens and Lesvos with ELIL, gaining practical experience in providing legal assistance to persons seeking international protection.
This year’s discussions focus on control and assessment at the external borders of the European Union, particularly in light of the reforms introduced by the Pact on Migration and Asylum. Topics include mandatory screening and border procedures, the securitisation rhetoric of “instrumentalisation,” and emerging forms of externalisation of migration control, such as proposed return hubs.
Conference organisers:
Silvia Bartolini and Sian Donkers
We look forward to our students’ contributions to this important initiative and eagerly anticipate their work’s results at the upcoming Athens conference.
